How does Cub Scouting work?
Each Scout is assigned a Den corresponding with their age/grade level. They will work with their fellow Scouts in the Den and their Den Leader(s) to complete the required Adventures that will advance them toward their goal of earning the Den Badge (example: the Tiger Den is working toward the Tiger Badge; the Wolf Den is working toward the Wolf Badge, etc).
Scouts can also work toward completing Electives, which are additional activities that can be completed at home with parents/guardians or as part of the Pack Activities that are planned for the year. Refer to your Scout handbook or Scoutbook (scoutbook.scouting.org) to see what the Electives are for your Scout’s Den.
What’s the first rank my Scout will earn?
Each new Scout is required to earn the Bobcat rank before they can earn their current Den’s rank. The Bobcat rank focuses on learning the fundamentals of Scouting and has the following requirements:
Learn and say the Scout Oath, with help if needed
Learn and say the Scout Law, with help if needed
Show the Scout Sign. Tell what it means.
Say the Cub Scout motto. Tell what it means.
Show the Cub Scout salute. Tell what it means.
With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide
Your Scout will participate in various Bobcat-focused activities throughout the year to help prepare them for this rank. We also encourage that parents work with their Scouts at home to help them learn and reinforce these concepts.
How do I track my Scout’s progress with Adventures and Electives?
Through Scoutbook (scoutbook.scouting.org)! When you create an account, you will be able to view and track your Scout’s progress as they move through the Cub Scout Program.
When will my Scout receive their award for a completed Adventure or Elective?
Scouts will receive awards for Adventures and Electives completed the prior month at our monthly Pack Meetings!
Does my Scout need a uniform?
Yes and no.
Pack 2819 is a “belt-up” pack. The only parts of Class-A uniform that we recommend are the uniform shirt, belt (which is used to hold the Adventure loops that your Scout will earn), neckerchief, slide, and hat. Everything can be purchased at the Scout Shop, which is at the Atlanta Area Council headquarters, located next to Truist Park in Cobb County. Carrollton’s local Ace Hardware also carries some Scout uniform essentials.
Class-B t-shirts also count as a uniform. One Class-B t-shirt is included in the price of the Pack Dues.
The two categories of uniforms:
1) Class A, or Field Uniform - this is your blue or khaki shirt with patches that should be worn at Pack Meetings and formal Pack Activities.
2) Class B, or Activity Uniform - this is a t-shirt that you will receive from the Pack (cost included in Pack Dues) and can be worn to Den Meetings, or to outdoor Pack Activities.
Do parents have to attend the meetings?
At the Lion and Tiger rank, parental involvement is required. The program is set up so that parents are involved with their Scout and working on their Adventures and Electives. This means that parents attend the Den Meetings with their Scout. Trust us - the parents have just as much fun (if not more) than their Scouts at the Den Meetings!
At older ranks (Wolf and Bear), we strongly encourage all parents to continue to attend Den Meetings with their Scout.
Can the whole family attend meetings and outings?
Scouting is a Family Activity! Siblings, cousins, friends, etc. are welcome to join our meetings and activities throughout the year; however, only registered Scouts will be eligible to earn awards for completed Adventures, Electives, and Ranks.
What is the cost to participate in Cub Scouts?
The annual national registration fee for a member of Scouts BSA is $80 .There is also a one-time joining fee of $25. The $80 will cover a full 12 month membership with the BSA.
In November, the Pack will assess dues of $175 for all Scouts continuing with the Pack into the next program year.
Do not let your financial situation be a barrier to your participation in Scouting. This is a fantastic program for character growth and practical skill building, that all Scouts should be able to benefit from regardless of finances. Please talk to your Den Leader or Cubmaster if you have any questions or concerns.
What do the Pack Dues cover?
$80 BSA Registration Fee for returning members
Advancement awards
A neckerchief and slide upon advancement to the next rank
One Class-B t-shirt for each Scout
Pinewood Derby car kit
Supplies for Den and Pack activities throughout the year
And much more!
A detailed breakdown of Pack Dues expenditures is available upon request.
Besides dues, where does the money for Scouting come from?
Fundraising! We offer two fundraising opportunities each year: Popcorn Sales in the Fall and Camp Card Sales in the Spring.
If you feel called to personally donate to our Pack, or sponsor another Scout, please talk with your Den Leader and Cubmaster.
What’s the best way to support my Scout?
The best way to support your Scout is by being involved with the Pack, whatever that looks like for you and your family! The only ask is that you adhere to the Cub Scout motto and Do Your Best!
Ensure that your Scouts attend as many meetings and Pack Activities as possible so that they can earn the Achievements for their Rank.
Work with your Scouts at home to complete Electives and keep them active and interested in Scouting.
Talk with your Scouts about the Scout Law of the Month and how they can incorporate it into their lives.
Lastly, every successful Pack needs Volunteers! If you can dedicate one hour per week of your time to ensure that our Scout gets the most out of this program year, we would love to have you on the team!
